People Who Inherit One Version Of The Gene Are 70 Per Cent More Likely To Be Obese

Fat people bulging out of their jeans can finally blame it all on their genes with scientists announcing the discovery of the clearest genetic link to obesity yet.
British scientists have published the results of a 15-year study of Europeans populations on Friday, which says that people with two copies of a “fat” version of a common gene have a 70% higher risk of obesity than those with none. Those unfortunate enough to have the two versions of the “fat” gene weigh three kg more and have 15% more body fat than the genetically blessed, who are programmed to be trim.

Scientists Create Sperm From Bone Marrow, Raise Prospect Of All-Female Conception

Atransplant technique has been devised that could effectively remove men from the process of creating life. Scientists said on Thursday they have grown human sperm cells from bone marrow.
They say this may lead to groundbreaking treatment for thousands of men, including cancer patients left sterile by chemotherapy.
But the technique provoked an ethical storm and could soon be jettisoned by the British government over concerns about the safety of using artificial sperm. Critics said the treatment threatened to breach moral boundaries as it would effectively lead to men being made redundant.

Four genes gang up to help cancer spread: Study

Four genes gang up together to help cancer spread throughout the body, researchers said on Wednesday, including one affected by arthritis drugs.
And a second study found that 87 different genes work to help make cancer more vulnerable to drug treatment. Both studies published in this week’s issue of the journal Nature should help scientists develop more effective drugs to fight cancer, the secondleading cause of death in the developed world.
Cancer is highly treatable before it has spread. But once tumours break out of their initial spot in a process called metastasis, they are almost impossible to suppress for long.

Stem cells could spell end for diabetes jabs

Hopes have been raised of a new treatment to free thousands of diabetes sufferers from the burden of daily insulin injections.
Scientists revealed findings of a study which shows that 15 young patients with type one diabetes overcame their dependence on insulin after being treated with their own stem cells. The researchers say it could herald the start of a revolution in treating type one diabetes.
Type one diabetics have to regularly inject themselves with the hormone insulin to control their blood sugar levels.
